These WLAN projects are mainly located in the UK but can also be found I places such as Canada, Australia and USA.
These projects have been created to provide a an internet connection that can be used by and only by a community making it safe for them to use as no one form other area can access it as it is specially for that area.
They serve groups such as business and communities by providing them with a wide area network which can be used to access people from other locations which is very different to a Local area network.
I believe they will have an impact on the digital divide as they can help people gain access to the internet so they can talk or email people in different states, countries and so on making it a community based wireless making it more likely that they will continue to use the internet.

Researching my communities ICT access
People that could benefit from ICT are people who are on benefits and don’t have a job as they have no way on making their own money ad must rely on other people so that they can live.
The impact of the digital divide is that most jobs are IT based so it means that some people must at least know their way around a computer to at least get some kind of job in IT which can be difficult if some people have no access to a computer.
People in our home town have access to computers via the town’s library and some schools in our area do provide some lessons in ICT to help them to get a better understanding and maybe move on to a qualification in ECDL.

Researching Initiatives to fund the digital divide
I have chosen to research UK online.
The purpose of UK online is to give people internet and computer access and to help them learn new computer skills.
It relates to the digital divide because people who are unable to get computers or have any access to a computer are on the wrong side of the digital divide as they are unable to learn how and what a computer can be used for and how it can improve their lives.
The main target clients are people who have no access to a computer but usually go to libraries, schools and community centres as these are areas that they have easy access to.
The strengths of UK online are people can learn how to use a computer an can get qualifications from it making it easier for people on benefits that attend these centres to get a job, it allows people with visual and other impairments to learn how to use a computer and on its website it does provide some answers to IT words such as Email and URL as many people may not know what they are and what they are for.
The weakness of UK online are that some centres do ask people to pay to use their centres whereas some are mostly free to use and since their website is online people without a computer cannot access it since they don’t have a computer which is quite ironic since they are trying to get people to use computers when they have a website so the only way anyone is going to gain any information is if they are told by a friend.
Improvements that could be made are they could provide people with a paper based leaflet that can be pasted to people in the area which would allow them to know where there is a centre and how they can reach it.

Case Study - ICT and pensioners in rural England
I feel that the technology has made a genuine impact on the lives of Dorothy and Clive as they have been able to learn certain things about computers and use them for there own or community needs which is a great help in informing people about community gatherings and other things, also because they can now use the internet effectively they can do all the things they would of done without a computer just within there home.
I believe there lives would be slightly worse as Clive has to keep up with community things and he must do this all by hand which can become very tiring and take a lot of time, also they would have to travel to get food and other useful necessities but if it is during the winter months it could lead to one or both of them getting ill.
If they have their own computer the community computer that is 3 miles away will be of not a lot of use to them now as they can now do all the things they did on the other computer at home the only reasons they would need the computer would be to get data of the computer that Clive was working on or if the home computer was to break and they had no other way of getting work done.

Who studies computing subjects?
At school I am studying Applied ICT and in our class we have only to female students in our class the rest are male.
I can see that there is a very large difference in male to female students this may be because ICT is mainly a male profession as many teachers, technicians and other IT jobs mostly men do these this may be because they are more likely to adapt to new information and software making them more reliable.
The impact of a lack of female students in ICT means that ICT is to be kept a male profession as either female students just don’t want to learn or have no interest in ICT or it is a very hard subject for female students to get in to.

Internet access for Homeless people
Five ways in which the internet can change the life of a homeless person are that it allows them to get an understanding of how internet works and can pursue a career in that field, they can access social networking sites and get friends that they can socialize with, they can start a business by setting up a website with the product they are selling, they can start up a bank account and keep money that would grow in time and they can talk to people via email which is good if they are unable to reach them.
The impact that not having the internet has on a homeless person is that it would cause them to become lonely and hostile which could cause problems outside on the streets.
5 things that are more important then the internet to a homeless person are shelter as they have no house, food as they will have gone some days with out food, family as they will have been left to themselves for many months, money as they would be able to buy things and buy housing and water as they need water to stay hydrated and live.

What did the world summit achieve?
The main aim of the summit was to get everyone to understand that there is a digital divide that is affecting almost all less economically developed countries and that something should be done, it also allowed them to make some decisions about how they can combat the digital divide
The 3 positive points that have come out of the summit are that by 2015 at least half of the world’s population will have access to some type of electronic device that can access the internet, a declaration was passed to help less economically developed countries and it has helped to evolve how IT is used today.
The 3 negative points that have come from the summit are that only 40 heads of state attended meaning that not many people understand the problems, it was difficult for countries to agree on things such as the internet making it hard for declarations to be passed and as 90% of the population of the earth were offline it was also again hard for the countries to agree.
I feel that the summit was not successful as the countries were unable to agree as at the time it was a very controversial topic and as only a few heads of state attended not everyone understands the problems.

Email in the Solomons
The extent of the digital divide is large as the island has not had any type of communication with other people as they cannot provide the people there with IT access the only way anyone could contact anyone outside of the country is by satellite phone which are highly expensive.
The problems that have caused the divide are the area being highly undeveloped meaning they are unable to provide the population with IT, also the area has been in turmoil due to gang wars and bloodshed that may have stopped the country form developing.
The impact of the divide has caused the country to become highly undeveloped making it hard for the country to keep up to date with other countries in term of IT use, jobs and business.
The solutions to these problems have been the introduction of Email stations which allow people to send email there are only 14 according to the BBC website but this may have changed and also the charity that is providing the country with this technology says they would like to improve on the use of IT by making it more then just using the stations for Email.
The idea I have that could be introduced to help close the digital divide is the introduction of lessons to teach the inhabitants of the island how to use computers.

Case Study - Laos
The digital divide in Laos is quite large due to the area and the large amount of natural disasters that would cost lots to repair if IT technology was set up.
The problems that have caused the divide include the mountainous region making it hard to get IT to all the places in Laos, the weather and annual monsoon seasons that would damage things that would cost lots to repair of replace, the lack of ISP (internet service providers) making it hard for IT to be set up, the high costs of IT that is also making it harder for the country to update and the poor power and telecommunications infrastructure makes it harder for IT to be powered and access the internet.
The impact of the divide on Laos has caused the area to be far behind in being up to date with technology and IT as the country has a GDP of 12.8 billion according to the CIA fact book but the information is from 2007 and that may have changed.
The solutions to the problems in Laos are Cantennaes which are devices that can be made from cans to boost wireless reception which would be useful in Laos mountainous regions, pedal powered wireless computers which have been made by the poorest country in the world called Phon Kham which is useful as they have no electricity to power electrical devices.
The economic benefits of these solutions are they are cheap to produce making it easier for the country to integrate IT into the communities, The social benefits include that almost everyone will be able to afford one making it less likely people will get into fights over what they own and it will allow people to stay in touch if they are in different regions of Laos, the educational benefits of the solutions are that it allows people to gain information for the internet to learn and the cultural benefits are that it will help to create a greater community as they will be able to talk about things they have learnt and things tha should look out for on the internet.

The success of wireless technology
Wireless technology is successful as a solution to the digital divide because it allows anyone with a computer to access the internet if they have a phone line connection as a wireless modem must be plugged in to the phone line so that more than one person can access the internet at once.
The problem that wireless technology overcomes is the ability for people to access the internet as many people did not have access to the internet as they did not have a phone line so they could not get information from the internet
The growth of wireless technology does have clear social, economic and educational benefits but the growth of wireless will not have positive effects on the culture of the area as they will have done everything they needed without a computer and the introduction of wireless technology could cause their culture to crumble. But the positive benefits for wireless technology are that it will allow business to grow with the ability to use wireless to send and receive information form other business, it will allow people to stay in touch with other people in different villages thanks to a wireless connection and it will allow children to learn using a computer and get information form the internet so they can get a better understanding of how computers work so that they can get better jobs when they leave school.

Reducing the divide
The advantages for the developed world in bridging the global digital divide are that it can supply money to other countries that are not able to provide by itself without help from other countries due to a lack of money.
The advantages for the poorest nations is that it will help them to get up to date so that they are able to get information and jobs on new technology that they can be trained to use.
Yes President Clinton was correct because he made sure in 1995 that every young person in America would be computer literate by the 21st century by making sure everyone had access to up to date technology.
Charities such as computer aid seem to do the good they are meant to do because it says that they give computers to countries that need them the most which they have said has been about 100 countries showing that they are doing good to help less economically developed countries.

Data Response
The infrastructural reason why there is a lack of effective ICT is because the area is less economically developed which leads to much of the money being given to other countries until they have paid back a debt or just don’t make enough money as a country to help update there way of life.
The most pressing need is to computerize Africa as many people have been able to buy computers but the county has not computerized meaning the area has not been able to update and catch up to the other countries that are more economically developed.
Computer aid projects have helped to increase the amount of computers sold in Africa as a large amount were sold when people could get to them as they believed they could be just like other people.
They have failed at this as many people were unable to help the country update with the amount of computers sold as many may not have been trained on how to use a computer leading to lots of unused computers.
Computer skills that are lacking are things such as engineering skills like fixing or programming a computer as no one in Africa may not have seen a computer before and have not been trained in how they work and what they are for.
The lack of business skill have lead to many business not using IT as they are unable to get people who know how to use IT to get them to join there business.

What leads to being on the wrong side of the digital divide
Guinea Biseau, Chad, Mali, Burkino Fasso and Niger are the least digitally developed because they are in less economically developed countries such as Africa because they don’t have enough money to upgrade the living of the people in their country so they cannot buy things such as computers and telecommunications because of this lack in money
These countries are on the wrong side of the digital divide because they lack the money to upgrade there way of life this could be due to debts the country has and they are paying them back but are not giving the population the upgrade they need to keep up with more economically developed countries

Society and the Individual
We should be looked after by the society in areas such as health care and protection against criminals as they are the main people who would want to cause trouble for the society so should be taken care of before the society can begin to grow and prosper.
But are individual freedom should be controlled in ways as like having to go to school or court as it is against the law not to go but in certain circumstances where the government tries to control the general population is where it should stop because making people do the same thing or wear the same thing can lead to the break up in society as they will be told how to act and what to wear to stop people from arguing and fight though it would be helpful in controlling certain rebellious people it would not work against everyone.

Monitoring Internet and Email use
The benefits of monitoring content on the internet and being sent helps the business decide who are the harder workers in their business and so give more praise to the hard workers while monitoring the others and deciding whether they should continue to pay them, it would help the organisation control the amount of viruses they get by deleting corrupted/virus infected files and it helps the organisation check on whether there is money being sent over emails or the internet as they could log the amount of time spent on a online banking website and can check the details they are putting in.
The negative impacts this type of monitoring could have on the organisation is that it could put off new or old employees as it could be seen as spying on what they are doing and judging them on there performance and it can also be seen as against their human rights as they are spying on them without the employees permission.
The advantages for the employees is that it would provide them with a chance of improving how the company bosses look at them because if they work hard and they notice this they could get promotions or pay rises and it also helps to cut inappropriate emails they may have received from other workers.
The problems that could occur if the employee uses the system for only business purposes is that it could cause the company to have to cut back on pay as they would be spending to much money on the system as it would be used frequently also it would make some people wonder why they need the system constantly if it is still being used when no one is even at the company.
The system for monitoring people is very useful in the interception of inappropriate and traitorous towards the business material as this will stop the amount of complaints from workers and the amount of people leaving to go to another company it also makes sure that workers are working as you are able to log the amount of time spent on sites and what sites they are using making this system a very useful tool

Teen Arrive Alive Tracking System
Teens arrive alive seem to have changed there name and what they do they are now called http://www.intellione.com/ and know measure the speed on roads, check the congestion of roads and relay all the information back to the web, mobile or IP-TV.
The benefits of this site are that it provides people with up to date information of the roads letting people plan there route without the need to go through lots of traffic, They use GPS to track the information and can relay it back to your phone so that people get the information quickly and the site has lots of information on the types of technology they use showing that they have invested a lot of money into this company.
The drawbacks of this site are that the information on technology is quite confusing with lots of words and not very adequate titles on pages, if a mobile is unable to get a single then some people will not get the information on time making the site unreliable for time also if there are lots of texts being sent at the same time then it will take just as long again making the site slow.

US Passports and RFID
The introduction of RFID chips (Radio Frequency ID chips) into American passports will be a quick and efficient way of checking people biometric information and other information.
The dangers of this type of identification are that people will not know who is checking the data on the passports this could include the Government tracking the movements of a chosen person, a criminal trying to steal your identity or a person who is curious about your citizenship, this type of identification can cause people to check private information without anyone know and this is against the human rights of these people (unless their criminals). It has been said that the US Government has set up some protection against information theft but these have done nothing to help the flaws of the chip these “improvements” include a shielding that stops the passport being read when the passport is closed but when it is open the information is venerable and as in many places the passport must be open as part of identification people could take the information when it is open, they have also set up some encryption devices to protect the chip so people have to decrypt the information before taking it which has been proven possible as some one has been able to clone the information.

The Pros and Cons of ID cards
The IT that is being used for the UK’s ID card scheme are database software for all the United Kingdoms citizens which does not include people who move form abroad as they are not a British citizen and fingerprint ID which will be stored in a database as they say it will be a legitimate way of making sure that people can not be in trouble if there card is stolen.
The purpose of the ID card is to provide the British citizen with a card which is the safest and secure way of getting a job at a private business firm or for government benefits.
I believe it will meets it purpose as illegal immigrants will not be able to get benefits if they do not have an ID card making sure that government money is not spent on people coming here, It will let people know all about their past history such as criminal offences a lot easier if they apply for a job and it will help people in catching criminals as they will now their face and will also be able to track their fingerprints.
The advantages of the system is that it will single out the people who have come to the country illegally and it will make it easier to send them back and we will not waste our money on providing them with money, it will be easier to distinguish between ages so older people will have cards which will be used as IDs so they could get in to high rated movies or buy high rated products and it will make it easier in providing people with jobs at it will make sure criminal offenders are not chosen for jobs that they could effect
The disadvantages are that it will mess if the social order as many people are already against the scheme meaning that there will be a great divide if they are introduced and they can make people more susceptive of others as they will want to know whether they are a proper British citizen.
Overall I think ID cards would be a good ID as it will help to keep the population of The United Kingdom under control and make sure that terrorists do not infiltrate the country.

Managing Information Overload
Many ICT tools have been created to help business and homeowners keep track of their finances and stock, to find specific information for something they have made but don’t want to spend ages looking for it, to simulate experiences whether it is in games or for military purposes and some software is made to help business plan ahead in the future if problems occur.
Spreadsheets are used mainly by business but can also be used a homes so people can keep track of finances, business use this type of software to keep track of their finances but also to keep track of stock, customer address and many of things that business may need to keep in a table. This helps in decision making by showing people whether they should decide to save their money, order more stock and many other tings.
Simulation software is used to give a simulation of some real time events such as flying a plane or to train people in certain careers like computing and bomb disposal without people being hurt. This helps in decision making by making the superiors chose the best candidates for the jobs they are being chosen for.
Data mining tools are used to as a process of sorting through large amounts of information and choosing relevant information. This type of tool is mostly used by business intelligence organizations and financial analysts. This can help in decision making by finding specific information and choosing whether they need to keep it or not as this information could be past customers or bank details of present customers and they must decided whether it should be deleted.

Computer Games - Why so popular?

Computer games have become popular as they give the player the things they would be unable to do in real life like some games offer character super powers such as flight or super strength, the ability to be a spy like James bond, it also offers people to become animals with special abilities such as Sonic The Hedgehog and his friends.
I don’t believe playing computer games make people violent unless they were already violent before they started playing as this would encourage them that what they are doing is ok in the real world which can cause some people (especially the Americans) to go out and do what they did in the game and by doing this they blame the game saying that it was the "games" fault which is not true as they have access to the equipment that they should not be using as they have been told by there parents and police that they should not use guns. Some controversial games include Grand Theft auto, Manhunt 1 and 2 and the new to be released made madworld which has been banned in Germany and Australia mostly because it is on the Wii which is supposed to be a family friendly console.
I believe it does make people more isolated as they spend less time outside socialising with friends which makes there people skills not so good making it impossible to talk to people as they would not understand how it works, also it makes some people like the virtual life more than the real life shown in games like Second Life and World of Warcraft but they sometimes meet up to talk with people they have met over the internet creating groups of games enthusiasts.
Network computer games make people both social online and off as they are able to talk to people over the internet getting people to listen to commands or just talk on certain games via a headset or microphone and as they have put that ability to use online there is on reason it should be to hard offline as it is the same type of conversation but face to face instead of like phone calls. (kinda the same as you don’t see there face but you hear there voice).

Pirated entertainment - the problems
The advantages of paying a supplier such as Apple for a legal music downloads are that they don’t usually contain viruses as they come from a reliable source, which is the Apple Company, it is also a lot cheaper than buying an album from a shop and there is always stock at a downloadable website as some shops run out of merchandise where as a retailer can run out, also you can count on the quality and that it will never break unless the download was interrupted otherwise the file will be fine.
The disadvantages of buying a pirated DVD are that the quality is usually not very good especially when the movies are often set at night making images very hard to see, sometime the DVDs don’t work making it completely worthless and you are unable to take it back as it is fake making the buyer lose money and some discs may contain some viruses which if played on a laptop or computer could effect the whole system.
He disadvantage of getting a pirate DVD of the latest Hollywood blockbuster before its UK releases is that it may be in different languages making it completely useless unless you speak the language (but can be funny to watch to see how other languages speak and how bad the lip syncing is), some Pirate DVDs have a delay so some one who is talking will not be talking later on as I voice is gone but is mouth is still moving and some people in the cinema sometimes get up to go to the toilet or go to buy more food ~(which they should o done before the movie started) making some of the images to be upstructed by the view of this random person .
The disadvantages of using an illicit music downloading site is that it is illegal to use these sites making in a criminal offence meaning that if found out the person downloading from the site can be sent to jail, sometimes people set up sites just to steal private information such as card details form there login they have used of online banking sites and so on this makes these sites a real threat as some of the viruses they send can completely wreck a computer.
Widespread illicit downloading does discourage the funding of new talent as some people may want the lifestyle but if they are unable to get the money the record company said they could get then the people funding the new talent could be dropped quickly as they would not receive the money as people will have downloaded it of the internet costing nothing.

Accessing original enterntainment
The ways in which it is easy to publish original entertainment on the Internet is that almost everyone has access to the Internet making uploading videos, music and pictures to websites like Youtube and Photobucket alot easier as people have a better understanding of how computers work esscially the new generation of people aged 15 to 20 as they has been taught at school how to do certain things on the internet such as web design and how to search for information and stuff they want to find using a search engine which makes it easier in finding a hosting site for stuff they want to upload like music.
The ways in which it is harder to see or hear original entertainment on the Internet are some hosting websites require you to download certain software which can supposedly "make the downloads quicker" which some do but some just don’t work making hard drive space smaller and lowering the amount of stuff you want to download, Also some websites have a very complicated way of how to download things which if you don’t gain an understanding of how to do it can end up with things going wrong, corrupted data and viruses like Trojans which you can get of many downloading websites as these can be used to gather your information from your computer without anyone know and these are normally got from unreliable websites which offer ridiculous things.

My Nan needs a mobile Phone. What shall i do?
I have looked on the internet for a phone that would be appropriate for my Nan had have found one that would be very useful as it is cheap and is useful as a mobile phone
The phone costs only £19.95 which is cheap for a phone but is a very old model but has a color screen which is useful when having to distinguish between menus.
The phone does not have picture taking capabilities as I believe this is not useful for someone looking for a mobile phone as it is not necessary unless the person is looking for a phone that takes picture, plus it stops people from getting frustrated when they can’t take picture of they don’t save on the phone also because it does not have a camera in it, it uses less memory that can be used elsewhere.
The Mobile phone I have found also contains speaker phone fro when every one wants to talk at the same time on one phone instead of pacing the phone around which takes time and can cost more the longer the phone is on unless it is on a monthly contract.
The phone is also “Pay as you go” which saves money in the long run as the phone gets paid for and uses “credit” to use whereas with m a monthly contract you may have unlimited texts and phone calls it does cost something like £30 a month so choosing “Pay as you go” will save money.

When can we trust websites?
I have studied some famous hoax sites and have tried to understand why we can’t trust everything we find on the internet.
From the websites I have looked at many are not very well designed as the background and color are the same for every page and some of the information has been fabricated such as the jackalope pictures, these pictures have been made in some kind of Photoshop as the image of the jackalope does not fit in with the background and some of the images are just plain crazy such as the jackalope being found in front of a busy Japanese building.
The signs we should look out for to show that the site is fake is the images, information that sounds too good to be true and some information that sounds down right stupid.
Some images will be fabricated a lot better then the website I looked at as they would use better programs which could cause many people to believe that the image is real making people take some of the information to be real as the image looks real but many people should compare the information to other websites to see if they say the same thing.
Some information will sound to goods to be true as it will involve the impossible as there may be something’s we may not be able to do for another couple of years and something’s that are just very, very, very unbelievable like http://zapatopi.net/afdb.html where people believe the government is trying to control their minds via mind control when most people now that there is now way someone can be mind controlled without very advanced equipment. Plus some people just make a website containing false information just to get people to look at there site so they will be noticed not to inform anyone.
Overall we can only trust sites that come from a reliable source like the government or universities as they are more likely to tell the truth than random people.

Business communication - what do they use?
The main communications types used by companies to day are memos, email, phone, face to face and messengers.
The main benefit of using memos is that they are given to people once they are printed out so then the recipient can go to work quicker. The drawbacks of this type of communications is that it use up an awful lots of paper which can become very expensive which could be very bad for the company.
The main uses of email are to inform or send people work or links to look at or work on. The benefits to this is that even if the worker is at home they can still receive work which could increase the productivity of the company making it more successful. The drawback of this type of communication is that is the user forgets his or hers email address or password they are unable to access the sent email which wastes time and if the sever goes down no one will be able to access there email.
The main uses of phones are to give information of a certain subject when one person is far away for another person. The benefits of this type of communication are that you can reach long distances such as a floor downwards or the on the otherside of the world which allows business to keep in touch. The drawbacks of this communication are that the phone bill can be mighty pricey and should only be used by very successful business and is the phone line goes down then no phone calls can be sent so the communication would be useless.
The main uses of face to face communication are that it allows business to meet formally helping to connect them together. The benefits of this communication are that it provides people with skills in talking to people which they would be unable to get if they were o write email to unknown people, it also provides people with a social network as many workers would socialise creating a happy working environment. The drawbacks with this communication is that many shy people would not be able to adapt to this kind of communication making certain conversations awkward and it also show people certain body language they would be unable to show if they sent an email which could make or break a deal.
The main uses of a messenger are that if people are unable to attend meetings then they can send a messenger to make notes and report back. The main uses of this communication are that it provides people with a job that can help the boss and the company, it also provide the messenger a look into the kinda life there boss has to experience every making worker-boss relationships stronger. The drawbacks of this type of communication are that many workers may see it as a privilege "a way out of working" if you will this could make some workers jealousy if not done properly

Evaluating my communication types
I use some of the new technology that has been made of the past couple of year but I have recently been using some of it such MSN live messenger, Email and SMS, as I was never really acquainted with what I could do or did not understand the other uses they had.
To evaluate my communication I mostly use MSN Live messenger to keep in contact with people or arrange to meet people on line so we can play online games such as resistance fall of man as this helps to get some entertainment I would not get by myself. Also as MSN Live messenger links to my Email account I don’ t have to remember to much as I know my email and password as they are the same to log in to my email and MSN which is very convenient as I can send links to certain pages via email that I would be unable to send via messenger which save a lot of time logging in and out of both accounts.
I some times use SMS to tell some people where I am or to find out what people are doing when I am unable to reach a computer this saves time I can get a reply almost instantly but every text I make does cost me a lot more money then if I was using my computer which has broadband, but because of this I use my phone rarely as I need to tell people where I am via phone call as it is a lot better then texting all the time as it saves time and I am able to get a proper conversation with that chosen person.
Overall I use mostly MSN and email as they are the easiest to access for me and the most useful out of all the types of communication I could use next to a proper face to face conversation.

Mobile Phones - when do in I use mine?
I use my mobile phone only when I have to like in an emergency like if someone got hurt or if someone in trouble, I rarely use it to call people as I never have my phone on which to seems like a waste of a phone.
I use my mobile when ever I am outside really because that is when I use it the most like to call home when I am coming come or to call to get a lift form somewhere but again some time I have my phone of which does annoy some people.
The major benefits of having a mobile phone are that it allows me to stay in touch with people who are far away as I can get information via text on there whereabouts so that I can meet up with them. Another major benefit is that I can call for help if someone is in trouble, one benefit that is not so important is that I can play games on it may not be as good as console games but it at least keeps me entertained.
The problems with mobile phones are that some people send texts using “txt language” which I don’t understand (because I’m old fashioned) which can really annoy me because I have no idea what their say so I sometimes send texts back for an explanation of what they just sent me which can be pretty embarrassing since I supposed to be able to understand it.
My mobile phone does fulfill its purpose as I can talk to people on the move and stay in touch with people which I wouldn’t be able to do if I didn’t have a mobile phone, it also adds some entertainment for when I am waiting to receive a text which can kill some time.

Email - when do I use it?
I use email to check the newsletters of certain games websites I have signed up to, I also use it to send work that I am unable to finish in class home so I can finish it later and I also use it to stay in touch with friends.
I use email mainly at home as I am able to access my email account with no hassle then I am at school and at home I can use my email address as pert of my instant messaging name so that again I can talk to my friends over the internet.
The major benefits of using email is that it allows me to stay in touch with people that live far away or I am unable to meet with, it also lets me arrange things I can do with my friends over or during the weekend. It also a major benefit in that I can get information on recent games that I have heard of over the internet, by doing this I can get the latest information on production and release date of the games.
The disadvantages I have with email is that I do get quite a lot of junk mail which can get pretty annoying, like I keep getting information on apple products yet I have not signed up to there website plus I do not own any of there products which is kind of weird since I believe they would have to get my email from some type of input into there website.
Email makes me more productive when I am able to send work home so that I can finish it and put it on my blog which can be very helpful as I can improve what I have already written without a time limit (kind of). Email makes me less productive when I start to look through my new emails because I begin to go of the work, but since I now the links don’t work at school I still check all the information that is contained in the email which can waste quite a lot of my time.
Email does fulfill its purpose in that it allows people to keep in touch and gain information on their chosen subjects that they would be unable to do without email but the purpose is kind of unfulfilled because of the junk mail that some people receive as this can be very annoying as you have no control over the junk mail. (at least it saves on paper)

Digital messaging VS voice conversation
The problems of communicating via SMS is that many people use abbreviations for words such as “gr8” or “ROFL” and if u don’t know what most of those words mean (like me) you could be left in the dark with no further information on what the other person was talking about, also another problem is that SMS does not give you any idea on how the over person feels as you can not see there face only a machine that receives there messages so you don’t see any emotion or facial expressions lowering the people skills some people have.
The advantage of using SMS is that if the message is not so important then it can be a useful way of keeping in touch if you are unable to meet the person you want to talk to.
The problems of using email is that many people like to add lots of information to it and add little emoticons like :( or :) and if us have to read lots of it some people do lose interest and won’t read it, also some emails could contain viruses that the person sending the email may not know about which could lead to an argument increasing the social problems caused by email.
The advantage of using email that it allows people form different countries to stay in touch which can decrease the social problems caused by email as it helps to unite people.

Analysing the "Good old days"
2 different types of office application that could be used by small business instead of the paper based system that was introduced in the 1970 are Microsoft Word and Microsoft access.
The advantages of using Microsoft word are that it allows the user to save the document they have made and can make changes if needed as the document has been saved it also will allow the user to make any changes such as correcting spelling mistakes or grammar errors so that the document is readable. The advantage of using Microsoft Word over access is that word is able to send multiple copies of the same letter to other people by the means of mail merge.
The advantages of using Microsoft access are that it allow the user to make databases so that they can hold large amounts of data such as customer details or the amount of products that are available it also allow the user to create reports on their chosen subject such as all the customer details on new customers or all the products that must be reordered. The advantage of using access over word is that Access is a lot easier to add new details to the data base whereas when editing a letter it can get very irritating trying to find the correct place to write.
The employment prospects of secretaries and typist changed only slightly as they would still be doing the same job just on different technology, they may have to be trained to use the new software but otherwise their jobs did not change at all
The new job opportunities were IT technicians as they would be needed if the computers failed to work or someone need help, IT graphic designers as they would help to create images that could be used by the company to sell of entice people and web designers as they would help to create and manage a website they helped to make for the company that the company can use to inform buyers of customers.

Ambulence Services
The working styles that are involved in the ambulance service are the drivers of the ambulances, the person that relays information to the people in the ambulance when they have received a call for a concerned citizen, the people that keep track of ambulance location via powerful GPS that keeps track of ambulances wherever they are and the people that re on call back at the ambulance station incase a accident happens close by.
The impact on the working styles in my area has helped ambulance drivers to improve the way in which the ambulance service can reach accidents quickly and efficiently as the introduction of this new technology has helped to allow the ambulance service base to contact people within the ambulance which are within range of the said accident.
The impact of working styles on the London ambulance services has improved since the introduction of the new technology as they are now able to get the information on the where abouts of people from people calling on their mobile phones which lets the ambulance service dispatch ambulances a lot quicker then if the person was to tell them where they were, this is also very helpful in a place such as London as the area of London is very big so allows ambulances to get a head start.
Some workers have objected to the introduction of new technology because it means that they need less people as one person can track the location of ambulances while another receives calls, they would receive less money as the money would be spent on buy more tech for there service, there is not a lot of need for loads of ambulance drivers as some would be driving around waiting while others would wait at the base and because of the older generations of people may not be able to adapt to the new tech they may have to be left off.
If there is a power cut then all the information of ambulance whereabouts and calls coming in can cause major catastrophe to callers and the service and if the service has circular networks and one of the computers go down the whole network would crash causing people not to be able to get in to contact with the services.
The benefits of this system is that it has allowed the introduction of quicker response times to accidents as everyone can keep in contact and the base can tell other ambulances where to go as they know where everyone is so when an emergency comes in and the there is and ambulance close to it then they can send the closest one.

Tool man
John could use a PDA to contain all the information in his diary and address book as this will allow him to carry fewer things as a PDA is lightweight and easy to carry and some types of PDA can be used as mobile phones saving John money as he will not have to carry small coins for phones, they can also be used as a portable media player which will allow him to travel out side of the car and will still be able to listen to music which should be an advantage and also some types of PDA’s have access to the internet allowing him to check his personal information or his email.
John could use a GPS which will allow him to save all the address he must visit while also allowing him to add newer address, the GPS can also be used to help John get to customer address on time with only slight chances of him being late. John can use the GPS to check the locations of certain customer address so he can plan his route and make his time more efficient.
John could use a Laptop to ensure that all his administration and sales are handled properly while traveling, when ever he has time to take a break John can use some of his time to check his administration and other information while also being able to access the internet near a Wi-Fi hotspot allowing him to take care of all the business details before Friday if he has enough time, plus as he has the internet he can use certain websites like http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp to plan a route from the address he is at to the address he wants to go to.
John could use software to contain all the information in his diary and address book as he could save all the information on a Microsoft Word document, he can save all the information in the sales catalogue and its latest prices in a Microsoft Excel File or Microsoft Access File and he would be able to create order forms using Microsoft Access forms option so that he can include information on prices and quantity on a form.
John could use a Mobile Phone to save money he would usually be using on pay phones and also he will have a phone with him at all time so that customers can call him and talk about business, he can also keep his phone charged in his car so that he always a phone that won’t die on him as he is talking to a customer.
John could use the internet to help set up his own website that he could use to provide information on his business so that he would not have to travel so much as customers can check his website for details, he could also use the internet to sent of an email account so customers can send emails to him and he can reply back to them without having to travel unless he is asked to.
The only disadvantages that can occur with using so much IT is that it would start to become very costly which means that John would have to start raising prices to continues working to buy the products the customer needs, also if his Laptop crashes and he has got rid of all his paper documents and has no back up memory he can get into a lot of trouble as he would not be able to get to certain places, get forms for customers, add new customers and plan his routes has all of his laptops data will have been deleted.

online entertainment - why so great?
I have been on multiple online PS3 games Such as Resistance fall of man, Sega superstar’s tennis and Dark sector while also using the internet for watching videos on places such as YouTube.
The purpose of this technology is to provide entertainment to people who are willing to be entertained by certain experiences such as playing a multiplayer first person shooter such as Resistance by playing a game of tennis using your favorite Sega characters.
The target audience is mostly the younger generation as they are more in tune with the internet and its many capabilities and as the many games online are rated 12 and up many people playing online games are 12 or older.
The target audience is mostly the younger generation as they are more in tune with the internet and its many capabilities and as the many games online are rated 12 and up many people playing online games are 12 or older.
It is enhanced by being online as it provides more entertainment by providing extra things such as online multiplayer or unlimited videos on certain subjects to watch it also allows developers to increase their knowledge on what the consumer like while also making changes via patch which allows quick changes that can be made instead of buying extra software.
The current limitations are that some changes made on certain games can affect the players such as new people complaining about a weapons power or characters ability which must be changed to accommodate their abilities whereas the more experienced players must now get use to the change which can affect them and make more problems through the online community and some updates can affect the way the game is played by increasing slowdown as the patch has been recently made making the developers have to create more changes instead of perfecting extra material such as add-ons or character skins
The online entertainment fulfills it purpose really well as it provides the player or customer with extra things to do when they have finished a game of have set up an account this gives things more replay ability.

Investigation in to Downloadable goods and services
The different types of items me and my family have downloaded of the internet are software, images, music, updates for my PS3 and some PS3 games and demos.
We have done this instead of buying the physical goods is because it is easier to retrieve of the internet then it is to get in a shop, the items are never out of stock and can be downloaded multiple times whereas physical items can be out of stock and might not work, Some items are only available on the internet like the PS3 updates and PS3 games and are not available in store or will be but are not released for a while.
The downloading fulfilled its purpose as I was able to get items I would not be able to get in physical form plus it also allowed me to get items quicker then having to wait for them to be released.
The only problems I have found are that some downloads take quite a while and sometimes don’t work as you need other software to work them which can take time finding which is frustrating, also some items can contain viruses that will affect the computer making it slow or unusable.

PS3 awesomeness
I recived an PS3 system update for firmware 2.34 which has been the quickest system update i've had must me they have sorted out the low download times now. The only thing about the update is that it did not specifiy what i was getting o well they must have improved some of the service (hopefully the PS store it been taken some time to load now and then).
Researching e-learning sites
I have researched 5 websites and put them in order of how good they fufil their purpose.
1) http://alison.com/ - allows people to register and set up places for people to learn and also allows people to access other peoples learning area and look at what they can learn.
2) http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/ - gives multiple hyperlinks to different subjects and has an option for adult learning.
3) http://teaching.shu.ac.uk/hwb/chemistry/tutorials/ - gives information certain scientific experiments and information.
4) http://www.reonline.org.uk/ - give lots of information on RE subjects which is useful to people learning about religion.
5) http://www.leeds.ac.uk/educol/ - allows users to search the site for information to learn.

E-learning - why?
I was unable to find the macromedia website so I used http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatconnectpro/elearning/virtualclassroom.html which still did the same thing.
The purpose of the webpage was to give people some information on virtual classrooms and what they would do if used as part of a business through the use of a multimedia video and some information was written further down the page reinforcing what was shown in the video,
Using this webpage as an example of e-learning it shows it to be very useful in allow people who are unable to make it to say school they could log on to a computer and learn the lessons from home allow students not to fall behind in their studies. It also provides an environment that is easy to traverse as it is quite simple to understand and it also allows some people to talk to other people via video calling allowing students to listen to what they have to do instead of reading.
What E-learning can provide that normal learning cannot is that it allows people to learn where there is a computer with the appropriate software making education more accessible to other people for different countries and backgrounds. It can also allow students to go over information they may have missed.
The disadvantages of E-learning is that it would ruin students people skills as they would not need to talk to anyone as they would type everything making getting jobs harder as they would not be able to answer, also if students do not understand the information they are given they can ask for help but if they still do not understand they would be unable to actual see there teacher as the would be in a different location.

Online simulation - why use it?
I have used the website http://frog.edschool.virginia.edu/Frog1/ to review its purpose.
The purpose of the site is to show people how to practice dissecting a frog and can also give brief demonstrations via a multimedia download which is played using QuickTime. The student is also allowed to practice what they have learned on a picture of the frog but I have found this to be very unresponsive in certain areas of the picture e.g. the practice information told me to click on where I believed the frog should be pined I was able to click on top limbs which were at the top but the bottom limbs always came up with “this is incorrect” making the practice frustrating.
The site is very good on helping students understand what they have to do before dissecting a frog but the site is highly unusable for dissecting a frog as it is pictures taken and u the student is asked to click on areas that are unresponsive making the student learn nothing as the dissection would not work also because there is no animation the student does not know whether they have dissected any part of the frog as it only says “you are correct” or “you are incorrect”.
What this site shows me about online simulation for education is that it needs more work as the site is unresponsive in allowing students to proceed and as there is no animation nothing can be shown as the student progresses so dissecting a real from is the better way at the moment.

Learning simulations and objects - why use them?
I have been using the website http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/ to find out the purpose of the site.
The purpose of the site is to educate people on certain periods of time such as the 1960s to 2000 and what were the major events during that time period such as the creation of personal computers and information networks. By going to the time line option on the main page the user is able to chose a period of time and learn about the major events which is what I had to look at, by choosing a sub option on a period of time it give detailed explanations on what happened throughout that period for it to happen while also including interactive portions for more information that the user can interact with.
What it teaches us about online education is that children can learn large amounts of information on a website like Making the Modern world as it allows interactive interaction between the user and the information allow children to gain an understanding at their own pace by being able to back and forth between information just in case they don’t understand.

Weather results - using real time information
The results for the past 5 day’s weather are:
Saturday – Sunny
Sunday – Sunny
Monday – Sunny Intervals
Tuesday – Light Showers
Wednesday – Moderate Showers
These weather results are very slightly different as 1 of the days is not the same as the 5 day forecast I looked for. This could be because the amount of time that had been forecast was to far in the future for it to be correct as many changes in wind direction and clouds could cause a quick change in weather also I should of checked back once in a while to see if they had changed the forecast for Wednesday as it was the only day not to follow the forecast

Online Banking - How useful?
The two online banks I will be investigating are Barclays and Lloyds TSB.
The purpose of online banking is to be able to check your account balance, transfer money to other accounts or people, set up standing orders into accounts or bills that must be paid over a certain period of time and many other useful extras that can all be done at home instead of at the bank you use.
The target audience of online banking are over sixteen’s as they are eligible for a chip and pin card which is used in Barclays new updated online banking as they must use there chip and pin card in a device called PINsentry where they put in their card into the device and must put in their pin and they are given a code to access their online account the codes are always random and the PINsentry has also recently been introduced to increase security but to receive the device and card they must go to one of the branches banks whereas Lloyds TSB allows customers to register online, by telephone or going to one of the many branches but to register online you have to put in all your card details and personal details and if the website was a scam website then this could lead to people having their account details stolen as there does not seem to be to much security.
Both websites fulfils these purposes its just Barclays seems to be more secure as they offer another line of security then Lloyds but since I do not use Lloyds my statement may not be correct as they may include extra devices or other security.
The major advantages of using online banking is that it is easy and quick, does not involve going long distances to get to one of the branches, can be done almost anywhere where a computer has an internet connection, some online banks offer extra protection and it allows people to set up standing orders for bills to business like British gas.
The limitations are that certain people set up scam websites meant to look like the proper official bank website which they use to recover card details and information to make counterfeit cards they do this by sending an E-mail to a certain customer say that something has gone wrong and that they must in put there details again.
Online banking could be improved by making sure that bank websites are official by putting a non-copy and paste image that show that the websites are official and stops the theft of online details and increase security to stop accounts getting hacked into.

EBAY - why so successful
The major purpose of eBay is to allow people to sell products they own for a price they like and allow other people to bid on the product over a certain period of time, it also allows some users to set up shops to sell specific product such as clothing (like the socks I have)
The target audience of eBay is for older and more matured people as products are of interests to collectors of antiques or are trying to find cheap presents for the friends or family as some prices for products such as games and DVDs are a lot cheaper on eBay compared to other online retailers.
The action process is quite simple really the person selling the item chooses a price they are willing to sell the product at, add P&P (post and packing) if they want as they can gain money lost in this process and allow people to bid. To bid is just as easy as the person willing to buy the item must be willing to pay the price of the object plus post and packing without being out bid this is helpful is the person does not wish to own the product as they don’t need to bid more.
It fulfils these purposes very well as there are lots of online stores which allow people to buy products at lower prices then they could find anywhere else on the internet, also this allows many people trying to find rare products to buy them as they may be a collector of a fan.
The benefits of using eBay is that the prices on some objects are very low in price allowing people to save money, collectors are able to find products they are looking for, it lets people who want to sell the products they don’t want for a price they like which allows them to gain money and people are able to get products from different countries by sellers in different countries.
The limitations of using eBay is that is someone gets in to your account they are able to buy anything (which has been shown on the news with children accessing eBay accounts and buying toys), some people sell ridicules items which make find some product frustrating, some people lie by selling an item when they actually aren’t leading to people losing money and no refunds as the site does not take responsibility and some people sell items that can be found at high street and supermarkets for very high prices which makes find low prices hard (this has been seen with the releases of some games consoles with someone selling a Nintendo Wii console for £1000)
eBay is so successful as a shopping model as it allows normal people to sell items they do not want any more for some money they may need and also allows the to set up shops without the need for a building or high street shop and as the internet is become more accessible to lots of people more people will buy from the website allowing people to become more economically sufficient.

Using real time information to plan a journey
Today I had to plan a journey from my home address to Tottenham court road in London.
The services I used were www.theaa.co.uk and www.buytickets.virgintrains.co.uk.
My journey via a car using the AA journey Planner says that if I leave a 12:30pm on the 19th September it will take me 2 hours 9 minutes to travel 98.9 miles to get to Tottenham court road but it does not say how much it would cost to get there as petrol would be a cost of driving.
My journey via a train using the virgin train’s website says that if I leave a 12:35pm on the 19th September it will take me 2 hours 49 minutes with only one change of train at a cost of £30.40 for a single ticket and £57.10 for a first class ticket but it does not say how far I have travelled as this could prove to be a shorter route.
I found The AA site a lot more easier to plan my journey as it asked all the right questions with out there being to much and I was able to input my home address it to the journey planner unlike the Virgin trains site as this proved to be a lot more expensive and frustrating as you had to input the nearest station to find out the time and the site did not have a station locater making finding stations a lot more difficult.

2004 Tsunami (indian ocean earthquake) and how infromation was sent
When the Tsunami was detected E-mails were sent to the more developed parts of Asia whereas the less developed areas were left out leading to them getting less indication of the Tsunami.
With the E-mails being sent out information was shared quickly allowing more developed areas of Asia to try and protect themselves.
The interaction between others and organizations was through text messages as the phone lines were down and all the computers were not working allowing text messages to be sent quickly between people.
Online Groups were set up to help raise money for the Tsunami and it brought the community together and allowed larger groups of people help a good cause.
Modern communication services are used more than older ones because more people are able to access then at once allowing large numbers of people to communicate at the same time.
The services used were put to there purpose perfectly as relatives of people in the Tsunami were able to contact them quickly allow relatives to be relived.

The limatations and benefits of using Usenet for finding specific information
Today I used Usenet to find information on the "Digital Divide".
The limitations with Usenet is that many people have lots of different opinions on what the "Digital Divide" is making information confusing.
Whereas the benefits of using Usenet is that popular groups have lots of information stating different opinions which creates a wide variety in information.
The site does fulfil its purpose but only if you need a variety of opinions

The Purpose and Functionality of SMS, Chat and E-mail
The purpose of SMS, Chat and E-mail are to communicate with other people with different devices such as a mobile phone for SMS and a computer with an internet connction for chat and E-mail. The Functionality of these are not so similar as SMS is short messaging service and is used to quickly send messages that are not so important whereas Chat is normal communication between people on websites and Email is to send a message that can be sent qucikly and safely. But there are some dangers caused by using certain types of messaging such as Chat which is accesed by some websites but this causes problems such as underaged users and pedophiles which can cause greater problems outsude of the virtual chatroom.
IT Homework
Microsoft outlook (full name Microsoft office outlook) is a personal information manager.
This application is part of the Microsoft office suite and is mainly used as e-mail but also includes a calendar, Task manager, Contact manager, Note taking, a journal and web browser.
Microsoft outlook can be used as a standalone application but can also be used in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Office SharePoint server to provide enhanced functions for multiple users in an organization such as shared mailboxes and calendars, Exchange public folders, SharePoint lists and meeting time allocation.
Outlook Add-ins are small helping programs for Microsoft Outlook. The main purpose of the add-ins is to add new functional capabilities into Microsoft Outlook and automate some routine operations.
